Hydraulic Cylinder repair can be a routine task for someone who has a solid understanding of hydraulic cylinder components and their place inside the cylinder. In this blog, we will be discussing various sealing components and the functions they serve to make a hydraulic cylinder work.
Rod Wipers: These seals are fitted to protect the seals inside the cylinder from damage and the hydraulic system from contamination, and the wipers provide that by preventing dirt, water, ice, and other foreign material from adhering to the rod on the return stroke.
Rod Seals: Rod seals are one of the most critical seals, they play a key role in keeping hydraulic fluid from escaping the hydraulic cylinder. A leaking rod seal will create operational and environmental problems.
Rod Wear Rings: These components are also known as Wear Bands or Guide Rings – their main function is supporting the load and keeping the centricity of the rod and the piston with the housing, and most importantly preventing metal to metal contact.
Buffer Rings/Seals: True to its name; these components act as a buffer or as a shock absorber when extreme and sudden pressure occurs inside the cylinder. They absorb most of that pressure spike from getting to the rod seal causing a premature failure.
Piston Seals: These components play a crucial role in the proper function of hydraulic cylinders. Piston seals prevent fluid from evading the piston and aid the cylinder to retract in a double acting cylinder. A poorly designed piston seal will cause a reduction in the distinctive pressure available for a hydraulic cylinder to perform properly. Piston seals can be single or double acting seals depending on the cylinder application.
Piston Wear Rings: Piston wear rings and rod wear rings both function the same, and they could be interchangeable if the housing dimensions are the same.
Hercules Sealing Products offers a wide range of hydraulic cylinder components, including various types of rod wipers, rod seals, rod wear rings, buffer rings, piston seals, and piston wear rings. These components are easily accessible by using our search by size tool, located below the main search bar. Simply type in your inch or metric ID, OD, and HT and our search by size tool will generate all the seals we carry for those sizes. Hercules also offers a variety of repair accessories and tools for all your hydraulic repair needs.
